The first block of solar cells for the FASTRAC nanosatellite was completed on November 27th, 2004. This block of six cells is the first of approximately 52 blocks that will cover both satellites to provide power for the spacecraft while in orbit.

A functional test showed nominal operation and power generation under ambient light conditions. Each block is made up of 6 cells, and 3 blocks together make up a solar cell "string". Each satellite has 8-9 strings of cells to provide the necessary power for operation during suboptimal lighting conditions.

The cells are single junction Ga-As units provided at generous discount by Spectrolab, Inc. Assembly took place in the University of Texas Satellite Design Lab cleanroom in W.R. Woolrich Laboratory.
